photo-therapy:

I decided to give the crayon melting trend a try and was successful! Instead of gluing the crayons directly onto the canvas I glued them to a piece of scrap wood and positioned the wood so that the crayons dangled an inch from the canvas’s top. Here are a few things I noticed:

1. Pointing the hair dryer nozzle from different angles creates cool effects. At first I pointed it straight at the crayon tips so it melted in a vertical line. Pointing up makes it splatter and pointing down makes it thin out faster. I know these seems obvious but it’s good to keep in mind.

2. The crayons are kind of like periods…at some points no wax drips down and later about half the crayon gushes out (gross, I know). So peel back the paper so the melted wax doesn’t build up and surprise you.

3. Even though I used crayola, some colors reacted differently. Some lose pigment faster and some combine with other colors easier. Carnation pink get giving me problems.

This is a simple, cheap art project so I recommend it! Get creative; use other color combos besides rainbow and try tilting the canvas in different directions.
